Security B-Sides DC  Washington, D.C. – October 17, 2014 – Merritt Group Inc., a nationally recognized marketing communications firm, is proud to announce that Michelle Schafer, Vice President of the firm’s Security Practice, will be presenting this weekend with Tim Wilson, Editor in Chief of DarkReading, at Security B-Sides DC. The panel session they are giving, How to Make Headlines Roll: The Media’s Impact on Security. will be held at 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, October 19th at the Washington Marriott Metro Center in Washington, DC.

“The volume of news relating to security compromises and breaches has grown dramatically over the last year,” said Tim Wilson, Editor in Chief of DarkReading, one of the Web’s most widely-read cyber security publications. “While some breaches have resulted in significant brand damage to the victims and the resignations of key executives, others have gained little attention in the media. I’m looking forward to doing this presentation with Michelle Schafer, who’s one of cyber security’s top PR pros, to examine why some breaches are big news and others aren’t.”

In 2013, Security B-Sides DC exceeded all expectations, with 650 tickets, over 450 attendees, many volunteers, and a band of determined organizers. The numbers immediately made B-Sides DC the largest first-year B-Sides, and the third-largest B-Sides in the world. Both Michelle and Tim are looking forward to educating attendees on the media’s impact on cyber security in 2014.

Session Description:

The very public breach at Target cost the company millions and resulted in the resignations of the CIO and the CEO. Yet other breaches are barely reported. Why are some security incidents so impactful, while others are swept under the rug? In this session, the head of one of the security industry’s top PR practices and the editor-in-chief of one of the security industry’s most widely-read news publications will join to offer an inside look on how the security media works, how stories are chosen, and why some incidents become “hot news.” You will also get some advice on how to manage the media when you face a breach, and how to develop a critical eye when reading about other organizations’ security incidents.
