What do you do at Merritt Group?

I am an intern here at Merritt Group from George Mason University and I do a little bit of everything. I have been assigned to a variety of clients within the different groups where I am able to work on different tasks like media lists, briefing docs, pitching, content development, coverage sweeps and wherever I am needed.

What’s your greatest moment — whether in work, school or marketing/PR — so far?

My greatest moment would honestly be gaining this internship opportunity. The moment I started researching Merritt Group and understanding all that the company stood for, I wanted nothing more than to work here – and was even more sold after coming into the office to interview. With this being my last semester at Mason, I wanted to make sure that I was able to find a place where I was able to learn, grow and develop my craft before the working world. So far seven weeks in, I feel that I am doing that here with the Merritt family.

Who do you love to follow on Twitter or Instagram and why?

Will Smith! He recently joined Instagram and I have been trying to figure out what life has been like before he joined the Instagram community. When you think about his role in “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” or “Bad Boys,” he is already hilarious, but now he has a platform to be himself and give you insight into his private life, and the content is great! Plus, he gives great advice and is authentic with his audience.

What’s your favorite piece of technology?

My Amazon Firestick! I received the Firestick for Christmas and have been obsessed ever since. To have all of the streaming apps, TV shows and movies, all in one place is awesome. Who needs cable when you have so many movie and TV options to select from at times that are convenient for you?

What’s your favorite thing about living in the Washington, D.C., area?

The amount of opportunity here in the region. There is just always something going on. If I want to go out and enjoy the city, try new things or meet new people, there are various events occurring each week to allow me these new experiences. D.C. is the perfect balance of having a lot going on but not too much where you feel overwhelmed. I like to think of it as the happy medium between Richmond, V.A. (my hometown) and New York City. D.C. is smack dab in the middle of the two but it’s has great qualities from both cities.

What do you love to do when you are not working?

When I am not working and not finishing up assignments for school, I like to explore my creative side. I love to paint and craft, especially for family and friends. I have previously made throw pillow covers for my room, paintings, and scrapbooks.  I find it so relaxing and exciting to watch the evolution of projects from start to finish.

What’s the best book you’ve read recently?

Recently I read “Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. It is about a black woman’s journey through life as she tries to find herself and love herself. It was an amazing book and made me look at my own life. I definitely suggest checking it out.

What are your podcast recommendations?

If pop culture and comedy interest you, then I suggest “The Read. If you hear me giggling at my desk, it is because I am listening to that week’s episode. The two hosts cover current events in pop culture and the news but with a comedic spin. They provide advice for their listeners and share their views on everything that has happened that week.

What’s your favorite Merritt Group memory?

Valentine’s Day! I am usually not a huge fan of Valentine’s Day but when I came into the office and saw how excited everyone was, I couldn’t help but enjoy the holiday too. Everyone was so enthusiastic, sharing their treats with one another and the positive energy was amazing. It was just fun to witness all of the genuine fun.

What’s one thing you can’t live without?

If I had to select a material item, I probably would say my hoop earrings. I don’t know what it is about them, but they are my favorite piece of jewelry. They can dress up any outfit. Even if you’re wearing a hat and hoodie, the hoops make it look like you put in a little more effort into the outfit. All of my friends and family know that my hoop earrings are a staple to me and my personality.
