What do you do at Merritt Group?

My title is Recruiter, which is the majority of what I do but I also work with my awesome boss, Colleen, on Human Resources tasks such as planning events and working on our benefits programs. No day is the same and I love that. It is my job to find the best and brightest in the marketing and public relations world and then convince them to come work for us.

What’s your greatest moment — whether in work, school or marketing/PR — so far?

I am pretty proud of myself for being able to handle graduate school and work full time while also teaching three pilates classes a week, especially this last semester. I was completely out of my element taking a finance class and managed to do well. There were a few moments where I really wanted to drop the class but I pushed through.

Who do you love to follow on Twitter or Instagram and why?

So...I am not on Twitter or Instagram. Facebook is enough social media for me. I just like to see what my friends and family are up to.

What's your favorite piece of technology?

Can I be lame and say my cellphone? That thing is a lifesaver.

What’s the one gadget you think needs to be invented?

I have a few necklaces that could benefit from a necklace detangler. It’s seriously so frustrating. I will get rid of them sometimes because I don’t feel like untangling them.

What’s your favorite thing about living in the Washington, D.C., area?

It’s impossible to be bored around here. There is so much to do! The museums in D.C. are a good place to start. My favorites are the Natural History Museum and the American History museum. Also, if you have never been to the zoo, you have to go. I love watching the seals swim around. If you don’t feel like making the trek to D.C., you could do a ghost tour in Old Town, Alexandria. I recently did a ghost tour bar crawl in Old Town and it was really fun.

What do you love to do when you are not working?

Fitness and wellness is a big passion of mine. When I am not working you can find me teaching Pilates at Mind the Mat in Alexandria or leading stress relief exercises for Merritt Group. Health and wellness are a big part of the culture here at Merritt Group and it's one of the many reasons why I love working here. We do quarterly team fitness classes and keep our pantry stocked full of healthy snack options. In May, we had a big team staff meeting where I was able to lead a breathing and stress relief exercise.

What's the best book you've read recently?

The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo. I loved this book because the plot was original. It wasn’t your typical run-of-the-mill love story. The novel is set in 1930’s colonial Malaysia and it follows two characters; Ji Lin and Ren. Ji Lin is an apprentice dressmaker while Ren works as a houseboy. Both characters are wise beyond their years and they find themselves intertwined through a series of mishaps and adventures. You become so invested in these two and the story keeps you guessing as to what might happen next. It is a beautifully written novel.

What are your podcast recommendations?

Merritt Group’s podcast Lay of the Brand is terrific. If you work in the public relations or marketing industry you should be listening to this podcast. It features excellent discussion surrounding top innovations in marketing, creative and PR.

I am a big sports fan so the other two that I listen to regularly are the Tony Kornheiser Show and the PTI podcast. The TK show is great because Tony is funny and he doesn’t just talk about sports. Even if you are not a sports fan you would probably still enjoy this podcast. The PTI podcast is how I get my sports roundup of the day, specifically when I am not able to catch the show. You can’t beat insight from the legendary TK and Mike Wilbon.

What's your favorite Merritt Group memory?

My favorite Merritt Group memory is when the entire team had a big offsite meeting and then we spent the afternoon doing a fun activity of our choice. We got to choose between indoor skydiving and Top Golf. It was a nice bonding experience for everyone and I got to know my coworkers more outside of the workplace. There is no shortage of fun and excitement here at Merritt Group!

What's one thing you can't live without?

I can’t live without coffee. I need it to survive. I drink 2-3 cups a day depending on how tired I am. If I was up at 5:00 am to teach a Pilates class, you can bet on it being a 3-cup day. My favorite brand is Peet’s Coffee. It has the best flavor. I drink my coffee black and the stronger the better.

What's the most interesting item on your desk?

My pictures are my favorite things on my desk. I have pictures of me and my husband. I also have a picture of my nephew, who is the cutest little boy in the whole world. This just reminded me that I need to get a picture of my new baby niece, who is the cutest little girl in the whole world.
