The Printed What???

This past Friday, Metrica's Measurement Matters blog called attention to a new phenomenon hitting the streets in Chicago and San Francisco. The Printed Blog! Just launched, The Printed Blog is described in Metrica's post as "the world's first daily newspaper comprised entirely of blogs and other user-generated content."
Metrica explains that content can be localized to a neighborhood level: "For advertisers, this 'hyperlocal' marketing provides more relevant propositions and cost savings than city-wide and regional newspapers." Metrica is soliciting feedback from readers on whether or not they think the web-to-print approach will work, and whether they believe social media will migrate further into newspapers. Metrica also asks how the concept of blogs in print might shift PR planning. Should be an interesting conversation to follow and weigh in on!

I find Metrica’s printed blog intriguing yet I am skeptical of its model. While The Printed Blog is a nice supplement to traditional online/print journalism (side note: notice how online journalism is now considered traditional), it definitely should not be seen as an alternative. Moreover, isn’t the beauty of a blog its ability to connect people via comments and link love? What will happen when ‘The Printed Blog!’ readers get the urge to “click through?”
It’ll be interesting to see how this new outlet plays out over the next few months. I admit, I’m a skeptic but I’m hoping Metrica proves me wrong.
